Fairview University Medical Center
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview - Minneapolis, Minnesota

In 1968, University of Minnesota physicians performed the world’s first successful BMT on a child with severe combined immune deficiency syndrome. This major milestone not only broke ground for the field of blood and marrow transplantation, but also set the stage for a successful BMT program. Since the program began a prospective research database in 1974, more than 1,670 transplants have been performed by the program’s pediatric blood and marrow transplant physicians. Under the leadership of Dr. Norma Ramsay, the program continues at the forefront of research that improves the survival of children undergoing BMT.

Its BMT program boasts one of the world’s largest umbilical cord blood centers. In 2000, FUMC performed the first successful cord blood transplant on Molly Nash, Henry’s friend and fellow Fanconi anemia patient. This was the first transplant performed on a patient whose parents underwent genetic testing to ensure their newborn baby’s cord blood would provide a perfect tissue match for transplantation.
